The graphic design is process that gives form and structure of visual information. This is area where artistic abilities come across polygraphic resources to design printing materials. The correct composing and combining of each element as text, shrift, colours and images are particularly significant for succesful completion of product.
Being knowledgeable about the different stages of production is also important from a practical point of view as it relates to the conduct of effective communication between the client and the contractor working on the printed issue.
DTP is the stage of ideological visualization of every print article (product). The key for successful print production is understanding of the whole working process – from scanning and creating the file to the DTP and the final result. An idea which comes from the customer, rearranged by designer and goes at the end for printing.

Heidelberg Eco Printing Award: Closing Date for Entries Extended until February 31, 2011

As a result of the keen interest shown at drupa for the new Heidelberg Eco Printing Award, Heidelberger Druckmaschinen AG (Heidelberg) has decided to extend the closing date for entries by a month to the end of February 2011. This means that any print shop around the world that is equipped with at least one sheetfed offset press now has until February 31, 2011, to submit an entry for this illustrious award. Prizes will be awarded to the most sustainable print shop and for innovative stand-alone solutions that promote environmental protection in prepress, press, and postpress.
Xerox to Invest $25 Million to Expand Upstate N.Y. Toner Plant
Xerox Corporation (NYSE: XRX) will invest $25 million in the coming year to expand its EA Toner plant to handle the increasing worldwide need for chemically grown toner used in Xerox printers and production presses. The project will increase Xerox's manufacturing capacity of EA Toner by 50 percent at the company's plant in Webster, N.Y.
Agfa Graphics and xpedx® to end business relationship
Agfa Corporation and xpedx® today announced a joint decision to end their long-standing relationship on December 2, 2010, after xpedx terminated their dealer agreement. Effective on February 28, 2011, xpedx will end its distribution of Agfa-branded graphics products in the United States. Management from both companies have agreed on a transition plan and timetable to avoid disruptions of service or support to customers. This effort will ensure a continuous supply of Agfa products. Customers will be able to purchase Agfa products from other regional dealers and from Pitman, Agfa's distribution company.
I. Submission of files
1. The printing of the order starts only after the approval of all files. They could be send via CD, DVD and USB.
II. Files
• Composite files (CMYK or CMYK+Spot) compatible with PDF-X3 standard (.PDF; .EPS; .PRN; .PS)
• We recommend PS file to be created and converted with Acrobat Distiller.
• For direct export to PDF we recommend the use of PDF 1.4 (Acrobat 5.0)
1. Pages and covers:
• Each page should be on a separate file - 001.pdf, 002.pdf, etc.
• The covers should be assembled - cover_4-l.pdf, cover_2-3.pdf
• Bleed: 5 mm from all sides added
2. Screen resolution
• for halftone (CMYK and Grayscale) - 300 dpi (min. 254, max. 381 dpi)
• for stroke (Bitmap) -1270 dpi (min. 600 dpi)
• inking: 300% (more than 330% should be reported as a problem)
3. Additional colors/operations
• The use of additional colors should be described after the Pantone Matching System and they should correspond to the order;
• The use of additional operation (hot foil stamping, embossing, dye, etc.) should be described in the file as overprint Spot colors.
4. Others
• The fonts should be included in the file or converted into curves;
• Important elements (logos, texts) should be moved 5 mm away form the knife (safety zone);
• The main texts in black under 20 pt or with thin strokes should be done only in K(black). For headings in black with size more than 20 pt with thick strokes c backgrounds, the color may be adjusted to C60 M50 Y50.

5. Recommendations
• the trim size of the page should be specified in the file in order to use the automatic arrangement of pages, the names of the files for the book should contain information about the volume
• Example: If the pages are 32, the name should be as follows: 32p_001.pdf, 32p_002.pdf...32p_021.pdf,... 32p_031.pdf, 32p_032.pdf The covers should be named as follows: cover_4-l.pdf, cover_2-3.pdf
III. Color profiles
Conformity to ISO 12647-2:2008
• for printing with paper type 1,2 (Fogra 39):on a rolling machine ISO coated v2 300 (EG).ice on a sheet-fed machine ISO coated v2 (EG).ice
• for printing with paper type 3 (Fogra 28): ISO webcoated.icc
• for printing with paper type 4 (Fogra 29): ISO uncoated.icc
• for printing with paper type Super Calandered (SC Paper): SC_paper_eci.icc
• for printing with newsprint: ISOnewspaper26v4.icc
IV. Color patterns
It is recommendable that each order be accompanied with a color pattern (with Ugra/Fogra Medienkeil v.2.0 scale included) from the client - Chromatin or from a color-sample inkjet printer.
The compatibility between the color pattern and the real print is within 85-95%. Color patterns with deviations more than dE10 cannot be reached in the conventional production process.
V. Client support
1. For each client individual settings can be supported:
• Default settings (if not explicitly specified by the client)
• adjustment of overprint of elements in black (K100) (recommendable)
• removal of overpint for the white (CO MO Y0 K0) (recommendable)
• trapping:
- 0,05 mm (0,15 pt) for CMYK elements
- 0,07 mm (0,20 pt) for Pantone colors (recommendable)

2. Lines:
• 175 Ipi for sheet-fed printing (with option for 200 Ipi and S20)
• 150 lpi for roll printing (with option for 175 lip and S25)
Note:
For each individual configuration of paper-machine-lines a test printing should be done. If the Production department finds the use of lines to paper improper, the client will be duly informed.
The client will be informed in the event of discrepancy with some of the listed requirements. If some of the requirements is not observed, claims will not be accepted.
